A North Wales Cancer Specialist will mark his 60th birthday, and retirement after nearly 40 years of service to the NHS and 23 years working in North Wales by running the Virgin London Marathon at the end of April.
Professor Nick Stuart will join over 30,000 runners for the 26.2 mile run on 26th April as he bids to raise over £1,500 for the North Wales Cancer Appeal, a charity which supports patients receiving care and treatment at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital.
Professor Stuart said:
“Running the London Marathon provides a very fitting way for me to thank all the staff I have worked with over the years and to raise money to support local people living with cancer.”
“When I started work in North Wales in 1993 I was the only Consultant Oncologist based in the area and the only chemotherapy specialist working in Wales. It has been a privilege to have helped build a first-rate Cancer Service and to have been part of a team that now provides care for hundreds of cancer patients and offers the best, modern treatments with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery”.
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of friends, colleagues and often complete strangers who have donated through my JustGiving page and have helped me towards my target of raising over £1,500 for the North Wales Cancer Appeal
One message which accompanied a £100 donation on Professor Stuart’s JustGiving page read: “You don’t know me but you have treated my mum who is in remission from cancer. She’s nearly 80 and has had some wonderful extra years because of the great work you do.” Another message read: “Thank you for all your work and knowledge to help me and many others live on and cope with this disease. Hoping you have a long and very enjoyable retirement, you deserve it!”
The North Wales Cancer Appeal (formerly the Ron & Margaret Smith Appeal) raises much needed funds to purchase vital equipment to treat cancer patients from across North Wales. The charity has recently given nearly £1m to help purchase a new radiotherapy treatment machine.
Professor Stuart added:
“I am training at least three times each week and running up to 18 miles each weekend. During the winter I have had to cope with cold, wind, rain and dark, evening runs but this has been made easier by the support already shown by my sponsors”
