Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board Chairman, Dr Peter Higson, has once again shown his support for the North Wales NHS Charity, Awyr Las, by pledging a personal donation of £1,000 to support healthcare services in North Wales.
For the second year running, the first female and male runners across the finishing line of the Awyr Las 5K Run will decide which specific hospital wards, departments or community healthcare services in North Wales should benefit from Dr Higson’s annual ‘Chairman’s Donation’.
The popular running event, now in its second year, takes place in the picturesque grounds of the National Trust’s PlasNewydd, near Llanfairpwll on September 5th. Organised with the help of the ‘Betsi Runaways’ running group, it is expected to raise thousands of pounds to support local healthcare services.
Dr Higson said:
“The Betsi Runaways running club have done an awful lot to help encourage staff members to keep fit in the past few years. The Annual Chairman’s Donation gives me a chance to support their efforts and at the same time give something back to support our patients.
I’m a very proud supporter of Awyr Las, because I know that the support given through the charity makes a huge difference to patients, carers and to staff across the region.”
Awyr Las 5K Run &Dafydd Hardy 1 Mile Fun Run Race Director and Betsi Runaways co-founder, Dr Chris Clark said:
“The Chair’s award will provide a huge incentive for runners and fundraisers, as the first across the line will have the chance to decide how the donation will benefit patients and their families in North Wales.
The Awyr Las 5K is up there as one of the most scenic short distance trails in Wales. Chip-timed and Welsh Athletics licensed, it’s a perfect balance for speedy types and first time joggers.”
Children and families are encouraged to wear onesies or fancy dress costumes to run the 1 Mile Fun Run alongside staff from sponsors Dafydd Hardy Estate Agents and loveable Awyr Las mascot ‘Nel Del’.
Cath Humes from Awyr Las said: “The Dafydd Hardy 1 Mile Fun Run will provide fun for all the family. As well as the fun run itself, children and families can enjoy Dr Zig’s bubbles, a bouncy castle, face painting and free entry to the grounds of PlasNewydd on the day of the race. There will also be special goody bags and finishers medals for all participants”
