Diana’s nurses on the crest of a wave
Friday 21st June 2013

A North Wales team of children's nurses inspired by the late Princess Diana
have been given a boost by a top music festival.

The Diana Community Nurse Team have been selected as the chosen charity
of Wakestock 2013, Europe's biggest wakeboard music festival.

The nurses are dedicated to making short lives more comfortable for children and families who are experiencing life limiting conditions such as severe cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.

This year's festival will be held in Abersoch, in Gwynedd, between July 12-14.

A Wakestock spokesperson said: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Diana nurses and support workers this year, particularly as they work locally across North Wales, from Wrexham right through to Gwynedd.

"We’ll have a designated area on the Wakestock site so festival-goers can find out more about the amazing children who benefit from the service and hear about the fantastic nurses that support these inspirational families in times of real hardship.”

One mother whose son received support from the Diana Team said: “We have benefited so much from this service. We feel that we received a lifeline rather than a service. The Diana Nurse offered excellent care. The feeling of being ‘on my own’ was certainly taken away.”

Speaking on behalf of the Diana nurses, Yvonne Harding explained there were more than 90 healthcare staff members involved in the team.

She said: "Caring for these children requires specialist training and support and extra facilities are often needed for families to comfortably and confidently look after their children.

"Without the Diana Team the children would remain in hospitals for much longer periods and the valuable support during evenings and weekends given by these nurses would be none existent.

"As well as offering much needed advice and care, the Diana Team provides equipment and activities that have a huge impact on the children’s quality of life.

"The team supplies communication aids and sensory and play equipment for the home, and arrange events with other families including an annual trip to a pantomime.

"The money raised through Wakestock will make a significant difference to the lives of children with life limiting conditions and we are hugely grateful to the Festival organisers for choosing to support the Diana Team.”

Wakestock 2013, Europe’s largest wakeboard music festival, is now entering its 14th year and is looks set to be a fantastic event on the festival calendar.
