Help Us Bring Back Playtime For Poorly Children
Tuesday 1st July 2014

A North Wales Charity is appealing to the public in North West Wales to help bring playtime back for patients on Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Children’s Ward.

The Ward’s 12 year old outdoor play area has fallen into disrepair in recent months, confining the young patients to long periods indoors as North Wales has basked in seasonal sunshine.

“The flooring has become cracked and it’s a trip hazard, while the main slide and climbing area has rusted,” explained Play Specialist Carina Roberts.

“It’s a huge disappointment for children when they come in to the ward and the outside area is locked.”

“We provide care and treatment for over 5,000 patients from North West Wales every year, and up until very recently, most of these children would have the opportunity to play outside.”

Children’s Service Manager Liz Fletcher added:

“The opportunity to play outdoors is highly valued by children and their parents, and we know that it helps distract children and alleviate their anxieties when they are receiving treatment in the hospital. Unfortunately, we simply cannot afford to repair or re-establish the outdoor area.”

“We are all very grateful for donations and support from the local community which have helped us to fund toys, new equipment and facilities for the ward. We hope that people will want to support these important outdoor improvements too.”

Healthcare staff are working with their NHS Charity Awyr Las to identify ways of raising the £10,000 needed to establish a fun and safe play area for the ward.

Kirsty Thomson, Head of Fundraising for Awyr Las said:

“This represents a fantastic opportunity for local people, businesses and organisations to make a real difference to thousands of local children when they need it the most – when they are feeling poorly and vulnerable.”

“We’d love to hear from anybody interested in fundraising or making a donation to brighten the lives of the brave young patients on the Children’s Ward.”
