Our Healthcare Hero for this month is Consultant Anesthetist, Dr Sam Sandow, who is organising “RECYCLE”…..a very special 103 mile bike ride taking place on Sunday 6th July, starting at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital and finishing at Bangor Hospital to promote the importance of Organ Donation. Every day 3 people die whilst waiting for an organ transplant….specialist Nurses and Doctors of Organ Donation in North Wales are organising this unique event to raise awareness of Organ Donation.
Dr Sam Sandow, also the Clinical Lead for Organ Donation at the Wrexham Maleor and the mastermind behind this event tells us more:
“In support of National Transplant Week, 7th-13th July, our team of specialist doctors and nurses are asking people to sign up to our RECYCLE bike ride on Sunday 6th July starting at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital at 9.00am or Ysbyty Glan Clwyd at 11.00am and culminating together at Ysbyty Gwynedd to promote organ donation. We are hoping families and friends of donors and transplant recipients will join us to remember organ donors and celebrate lives that have been saved.
Recycle is working alongside our NHS charity for North Wales, Awyr Las, to support a bereavement suite appeal to raise money for new Bereavement Suites in North Wales' intensive care units to allow grieving families and end of life patients’ privacy during the time of their bereavement.”
Paul Collins (far right in photo) from Across the Divide; a professional events company, says;
“We are very much looking forward to supporting this fantastic ride event through the beautiful North Wales Countryside and Coastal paths, it is sure to be a breathtaking one. The ride is open to all who are keen to get involved, offering options to join at two different starting points, Wrexham Maelor Hospital (69 mile route) or Ysbyty Glan Clwyd (34 mile route), with everyone culminating at Ysbyty Gwynedd for the finish line.”
