Mother was inspired to lose baby weight with NHS charity 5K run
Thursday 23rd April 2015

For the second year running, local charity, Awyr Las, are encouraging people to make huge strides for patients in North Wales by taking part in a unique charity running event.

The Awyr Las 5k and 1 mile family fun run will take place in the picturesque grounds of the National Trust’s Plas Newydd Country House on September 5th 2015.

The event is being staged with the support of Bangor based running club, the Betsi Runaways.

Over 360 runners took part in last year’s event. Among them was Mother of two, Dr Karen Addy. She signed up in an effort to lose weight following the birth of her two children.

Having had an 8 year break from running, I was 2 stone overweight and feeling unmotivated she explained

I was inspired to start running again by Chris Clark, founder of the Betsi Runaways running club and race director for the Awyr Las running events. Since then, I've run several 10k races and a half marathon, joined the Betsi Runaways swimming club and just completed my first triathlon on Easter Sunday.

I am pleased that I have lost one and a half stone and feel much healthier. Without the support of the Betsi Runaways I'd still be sitting on my sofa, merely dreaming of running again! Instead, I am now planning to beat my 5k time from last year’s race in the beautiful surroundings of Plas Newydd, this coming September.

Andrew Jones, Director of Public Health tells us more about the importance of a healthy lifestyle:

Physical activity contributes to wellbeing and is essential for good health. It can reduce the risk of many chronic conditions, like coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, mental health problems and musculoskeletal conditions.

Parents and youngsters can also enter the family friendly 1 mile fun run, proudly sponsored by Dafydd Hardy Estate Agents, who plan to stage an entertaining twist on the family focused mile this year - all will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The Awyr Las 5k run and Dafydd Hardy 1 mile fun run will give people of all ages an opportunity to run together, keep fit and give something back to their local healthcare services by raising money for areas close to their heart said Chris Clark, Awyr Las Race Director.

The two running events set within 169 acres of woodland and parkland in the Estate of the Marquess of Anglesey, will feature an event village with entertainment and fun for all the family.
