 Sarah, Annmarie & Sandra

Two Ysbyty Gwynedd nurses will take on the fundraising challenge of a lifetime this August in support of a colleague who is battling breast cancer and her husband, who has suffered a rare stroke.

Sandra Ewing and Sarah Tutte qualified as Staff Nurses alongside best friend Annmarie Davies in September 2013. But just days later, the duo’s best friend and 28 year old mother of two was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The devastating news came just weeks after Annmarie's husband Eurfon had collapsed at the family home in Rhiwlas, having suffered a rare stroke at the age of 34, only a week after graduating as a teacher.

Inspired by the excellent care Annmarie and Eurfon have received at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Sandra and Sarah will take on the notoriously difficult 3 Peaks Challenge this August.

Every penny raised will benefit the charitable funds of Wards and Departments in Ysbyty Gwynedd that have treated the plucky couple.

The nurses will climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within 24 hours, covering a distance of around 27 miles, with a total ascent of almost 10,000 feet.

“We have decided to attempt the three peaks challenge with the hope of raising money to be distributed amongst various departments within Ysbyty Gwynedd who diagnose and provide support and treatment for people who have suffered from a stroke or cancer” said Sandra, who works as a Staff Nurse on the hospital’s Endoscopy Unit.

Annmarie said:

“Sandra and Sarah are two of my best friends and what they’re doing is amazing and extremely supportive not only for my family but for hospital wards and departments in Ysbyty Gwynedd.  Hopefully future patients can benefit from any money raised.”

She added:

“I wish I could have the strength to complete this challenge as my personal way of saying thank you, but I don't think I'll be able to make it. However, I will be there to offer my full support and hopefully complete the Snowdon climb to be able to provide Sarah and Sandra the final moral support they need to complete their amazing challenge.

Through “sheer determination”, Eurfon has made a speedy recovery and is now a lecturer in engineering at Coleg Menai, while Annmarie continues to receive treatment on the Alaw Unit in Ysbyty Gwynedd and North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Annmarie will start a job as a staff nurse at Ysbyty Gwynedd following her treatment, and she and Eurfon will renew their wedding vows in May next year on their 11th wedding anniversary
