#TeamIrfon Santa Dash
Friday 27th November 2015

Local people are being encouraged to celebrate the start of the festive season by taking part in a Santa Dash along Bangor High Street in aid Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Alaw Unit.

The #TeamIrfon Santa Dash forms part of the Bangor High Street Festive Celebrations, organised by the People of Bangor Community Group. The celebrations, which represents Gwynedd’s largest community organised event, will see the High Street transformed as a funfair, fireworks, reindeer, winter wonderland, and Christmas market help to get local people in the festive spirit.

Last year’s inaugural Santa Dash attracted over 150 people, and raised thousands of pounds for Irfon Williams’ Awyr Las #TeamIrfon fundraising campaign in aid of Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Alaw Unit. The 45 year from Bangor launched the campaign in May 2014 after being diagnosed with bowel cancer which had spread to his liver.

Irfon said:

“It would be great to see as many people as possible take part . The Santa Dash is a 1 mile loop which starts and finishes at the Town Clock, so it’s a nice short distance for families, younger kids and parents with pushchairs.”

“Because the event is being very kindly sponsored by TDL Events for the second year running and being match funded by Barclays Bank, every penny raised on the day will directly support patients receiving treatment on the Alaw Unit.”

“Having been a patient on the Alaw Unit I know just how much impact donations given through Awyr Las can make. Staff on the unit are incredibly dedicated and want the very best for their patients, but they can only do so much through their NHS budgets.”

Since being launched  in May 2014, the hugely popular #TeamIrfon campaign has raised over £100,000 for Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Alaw Unit.

Money has paid for wigs and headwear, complementary therapies like reflexology and therapeutic massage, and new equipment. Specialist training is planned to enable NHS staff to identify mental health difficulties in cancer patients, something Irfon and his wife Becky, a psychiatric nurse, feel is of paramount importance.

It will also help to fund part of a redevelopment of the Alaw Unit this year, including building a £14,000 dedicated counselling room.

The Santa Dash costs £6 for adults, and £3 for Children. The first 50 adults to sign up for the Santa Dash will receive a FREE Santa Suit. To register, online visit www.awyrlas.org.uk/news/teamirfonsantadash or call 01248 384395. Registration on the day takes place at the Penrhyn Hall (2 doors down from Subway, near the main bus station) from 1445 hrs.
